Day 23 - Favorite Item

“When you become all that you desire,
you will have all that you desire.”
-
Carolyn J. Gable

Today’s joy focus is your Favorite Item. So, first you need to spend a little time thinking about “What is my favorite thing that I have?”

Last night I attended a dinner, and the hostess asked us all to bring our favorite item. This was very fun and interesting to think about. One thing that the question allowed me to realize was that most things can come and go, and things only have real value for me when I attach feelings and memories to them.

After some discussion I was able to choose a favorite thing that I have… My favorite “item” is my collection of quilts, hand-made by various family members. I sleep with at least one of them on my bed every night, for most all of my life. I truly feel the love that went into them as they were created.

Just thinking of them makes me feel great! I love being wrapped up by their warmth in the winter, and the cool touch of the light fabric in the summer. Their beauty makes me smile. A couple of them are very worn and threadbare in places, but they have been in constant loving use - which I believe is much better than packing them away somewhere to keep them “safe.”

One fall during our early college days, before I had ever even thought of dating my husband, I found out that he didn’t have any blankets in his dorm room and would have to wait several weeks before he went home to get one. The nights were getting chilly, and I generously loaned him one of my beloved quilts. I think that by blanketing him in all that loving energy contained in my quilt, I may have unknowingly claimed his heart. Oops! : )

I invite you to give some joyful thought to your favorite item(s). I would love to hear about your favorite item too!

Create a joyful day!

Day 22 - Teachers

“You cannot teach a man anything. You can
only help him discover it within himself.”
- Galileo Galilei:
astronomer, physicist, and philosopher

Today’s joy focus is: Teachers!

I posted the video about schools killing the creativity in children - and now I would like to joyfully focus on Teachers.

Teachers who care wholeheartedly for their students, teachers who encourage and uplift, teachers who bring joy to learning, teachers who might be overworked and underpaid but continue because they love teaching - oh, there are so many of them and they make me feel great!

I also want to joyfully appreciate the people who have caused me to learn and expand - even when they don’t think of theirself as a teacher! Here’s to parents, and children - all of us TEACHERS.

Here’s to the woman online who sent me a caring message that allowed me to see that I lost weight completely because of me - I didn’t lose weight because of someone else’s diet - I DID IT. I chose to love myself and raise my consciousness. That TEACHER truly empowered me and set me on this wonderful path several years ago!

Everyone in our life, everyone who crosses our path, can be a teacher when we are open to receiving their message! Sometimes the people who irritate us the most can teach us a great deal.

I invite you to joyfully focus on and appreciate the teachers who have touched your life!

Creativity in Education

I just watched a fabulous 20 minute video entitled: Do Schools Today Kill Creativity?

I wanted to share it here. This year my daughters began the school year at a free/democratic school. My older daughter decided it wasn’t for her and went back to the public school, but my younger daughter loves it. They are free to learn what they want, when they want and how they want (that’s why it is considered a free school).

Her creativity has flourished!! And, now that she has been there for a while, she is really beginning to see the possibilities that exist.

I invite you to think about education in a new way and imagine the possibilities for personal growth when you are empowered to follow your interests and inclinations.

Day 21 - Childlike Fun

“Almost the entire world is asleep. The few who are awake live in a state of constant amazement.” - Zen saying

Today’s joy focus is Childlike Fun!

Do you ever take time to just have fun? If you don’t yet, please do from here on out!

Yesterday on Oprah’s show they were talking about the benefits of Just Fun, and Oprah mentioned that she doesn’t do that because she is too busy working. What is all the working worth if you aren’t having fun?

And, you have many opportunities to perceive fun in your day - just shift your focus and look for it!

My thoughts this morning were on blowing bubbles… I need to get some supplies! Instead I was out walking with a good spiritual friend around a local lake. Perfect day… gorgeous! She noticed this lovely little park and paused to mark it with her gps… that pause allowed me to notice the swings - I love swings!!

So, I began swinging… looking out over the lake… looking up at this gorgeous old, gnarled and twisted tree beside the swings… a little girl playing nearby decided to join in on the swinging fun…

Where can you invite fun into your life? Do you have crayons around? Or a hula-hoop? Or chalk to draw an area to hopscotch? Bubble gum to blow big bubbles? A nearby park? A tree to climb? A hill to roll down?

I invite you to be free and joyful enough to HAVE FUN!

(I love the video below of dolphins playing with bubbles - In joy!)

Day 20 - Colors

Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous.

- Albert Einstein

Today’s joy focus is Colors. On a beautiful day like I am enjoying today, colors just seem to burst forth!

Right now, my world is full of new green, bright on the trees and blanketing the earth with grass. The sky is a perfect light blue, clear and beautiful, dotted occassionally with fluffy little white clouds. Flowers of yellow, red and lavender decorate the yards… What a beautiful world we have accentuated with fabulous colors.

Um, it makes me think of a box full of crayons… they just seem to call to me… wanting me to take them out to play… brings of carefree memories of coloring books - my own, my daughters’…

What about you? I invite you to enjoy your own joy focus on colors! Have a joy blitz!!!

Just joy

I had to share this quote here:

You cannot struggle to joy. Struggle and joy are not on the same channel. You joy your way to joy. You laugh your way to success. It is through your joy that good things come. — Abraham

You “joy your way to joy.” I love it!! When you find reasons to be joyful - you are joyful more often!

Day 19 - Babies

Your child is naturally joyful. - Abraham

Today’s joy focus is: Babies.

I love babies. I love to see them when I am out shopping or out to eat. Just seeing them floods me with a feeling of love and joy. I delight in their perfection - the glow of love that they emanate.

Seeing babies brings up the good memories of my girls when they were babies. I had so much fun just watching them. Seeing the joy of them “discovering” their toes, or their ability to move… It felt so good to hold them and bask in that feeling of love.

I so enjoy seeing babies when I am out and being able to enjoy them, and then move on. I love when you have those moments of connection with a baby, where they look at you and smile or laugh.

I love baby animals too. Seeing them just brings joy bubbling right up! Right now there are little goslings everywhere and it is such fun to watch them out playing with their parents.

I invite you to spend some time today joyfully focused on babies.

Day 18 - Transportation

I’ve failed my way to success.
- Thomas Edison

Today’s joy focus is: Transportation.

I love being able to move about from place to place with ease! Today I was able to spend some time out and about with my hubby in his car. It was a gorgeous day, and good to be out and about. He gets so much enjoyment from his car - “William.”

I grew up in a family that did lots of travel by driving. My father could stop for little cat naps and drive thru the night. Oh, I loved riding up front with him, singing along to whatever music was playing. I loved to drive myself when I was old enough to get my liscence!

I also enjoy bikes, boats, ferries, planes, trains… I love that it is so very easy in this day and age to get from place to place!!

I invite you to think about the modes of transportation you enjoy best! Create a great day!

Day 17 - Showering/Bathing

It’s “inspired action”… if it feels like the idea thinks you instead of you thinking the idea. – Abraham

Today’s joy focus is: Showering/Bathing.

I love showering or bathing - there is something so wonderfully meditative about it! I love the above quote about inspired action, because I always seem to have my best inspired action ideas come to me in the shower!

I have had several friends tell me that they get their best ideas or breakthrus while bathing. It must be that we are washing away any daily worries, refreshing our spirit… and all that good stuff gets thru more easily.

When I was a child I read a book - and I can’t remember the name of the book right now - but, this young girl was living in a museum, I believe. My memory is that to bathe, she stepped down into a black marble fountain…. oo… that sounded so wonderful to me. In my next home I will have a large tub that will require stepping down into, luxurious… um, soaking and bubbles… a glorious view of nature… candles…

I love the freedom that a shower gives… people break into song, dream big dreams, envision the life they desire… Enjoy your shower or bath!!

Day 16 - Clothing

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful. - Buddha

Today’s joy focus is: Clothing.

With the changing of the season, it is time to be wearing different clothing. It is so much fun to feel the different fabics against my skin, find that clothing that feels and looks great… Enjoy your clothing no matter what size you are buying.

When I was at my heaviest, I avoided shopping for clothing because I did not allow myself to enjoy the experience. I was focused on feeling bad about myself and my body. Before I began to lose the excess weight, I made a decision to shop for clothes that fit well and looked good. I went shopping and allowed myself to have fun and chose clothes that made me feel beautiful.

That shopping trip signified a major shift in my thinking. I moved from hating my body to appreciating my body. My body hadn’t changed, but my view of it did. I wasn’t even thinking about trying to lose weight, I was finding love for myself. It was the start of something big - an entire life change!

Right now, I am appreciating beautiful spring and summer clothes - gearing up for some big shopping! Plus, I just had the joy of looking thru a Prom magazine with my 17 yr old. We were admiring the beautiful dresses and getting ideas for hairstyles for her prom tomorrow night.

I invite you to focus on clothing you love, and what you love about clothing - fabrics, clothing, styles… Have a fun little joy blitz!

One step further along the joy path…
